The Cable News Network launched on June 1, 1980, at 05:00 p.m. Eastern Time with CNN headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Ted Turner started the new channel with a husband-and-wife team. David Walker and Lois Hart anchored CNN’s first newscast. Burt Reinhardt served as the channel’s executive vice president and hired most of the initial group of about 200 people, including first news anchor Bernard Shaw.

CNN has been broadcasting since its inception and has now made itself available on many cable and satellite TV providers, its website, and specialized closed-circuit channels (e.g., CNN Airport). It operates 42 bureaus, out of which 12 are located within the US and 31 outside the country. In addition, the company owns some regional television networks and local stations from over nine hundred affiliates, which receive newscasts and feature programming delivered by CNN. The successful channel was the foundation of Turner as a billionaire and paved the way for the subsequent merger of “Warner Media” and “Discovery Inc.” into “Warner Brothers Discovery.” To check the reliability and credibility of CNN, you can read our detailed blog on the topic.

On-air Presentation

In September 2007, the channel started transmitting the HD1080i format for high-quality news from CNN headquarters and adopted it as a standard format. You can subscribe to one of the three most economical LiveNewsPro packages for online live streaming, which contains 25 major US news channels in HD. Officials introduced the CNN Election Express bus in October 2007 to introduce mobile service in CNN’s political coverage in HD. The channel also utilized the CNN-YouTube presidential debates and candidate interviews through the Election Express vehicle, which is capable of five simultaneous HD feeds.

CNN made a complete makeover of its on-air appearance in December 2008, replacing its old look used in 2004. The on-air graphics took a curved, flattish look in the predominantly black, white, and red new box beside the CNN logo for displaying the show’s logos, as well as various segment-specific graphics that used to be on a large banner above the lower. This redesign also replaced the scrolling ticker with a static “flipper” that either showed a series of news headlines (selected manually or drawn from the RSS feeds of CNN.com) or background information regarding a specific news story.

On January 10, 2011, CNN introduced its next major redesign, replacing the dark, flat appearance of the 2008 look with a glossier, blue-and-white color scheme, positioning the secondary logo box to the opposite end of the screen with the 16:9 aspect ratio. Soon after the arrival of Jeff Zucker, who became the chief executive officer of the network, the “flipper” was removed on February 18, 2013, and reverted into a ticker. On August 11, 2014, CNN unveiled a new graphics package that ditched the shiny appearance in favor of a flat, rectangular look with red, white, and black colors and a Gotham typeface.

Features of CNN Center/CNN Headquarters

An Omni hotel is located in the CNN Center, which features a large food court atrium. Local business employees and tourists visit the food court, as do attendees of State of Farm Arena events, Mercedes-Benz events, and Georgia World Congress Center conferences. Large screens surround the center, showcasing CNN’s multichannel output. Studio tours existed up until 2020, with technology demonstrations including Chroma keying, teleprompters, and viewing galleries above the newsrooms of CNN International, HLN, CNN 10, and CNN en Español.

This escalator was formerly on the CNN tour and was the “longest freestanding escalator globally,” according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It was built specifically for the building that had to house a theme park; therefore, it occupies the original structure and is difficult to remove. The Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center offers MARTA rail service to the CNN Center. You can access The Red and Gold lines by walking to Peachtree Center station, which will take 10 to 15 minutes.

Experiments to Launch New Channels

The Cable News Network launched two specialty news channels for the US market, which later closed amid competitive pressure. In 2002, the sports news channel CNNSI went out of business, while the business news channel CNNfn lasted nine years before it finally closed in December 2004. CNN worked with Sports Illustrated through the cnnsi.com website but sold its domain in May 2015. The former CNNfn website was redirected to money.cnn.com, which resulted from a strategic partnership between CNN and Money magazine.

The company had money and Sports Illustrated as Time Warner properties until 2014, when the magazines were spun off into Time Inc., a subsidiary of Time Warner. Officials from the CNN headquarters launched “Great Big Story” in November 2015 to target youth audiences. By September 2020, it had attracted close to six million followers on Facebook and YouTube before its closure. In May 2023, CNN debuted a free ad-supported television channel called CNN Fast, airing 24/7 short form international stories and news events on a rolling news ticker. You can catch the channel on Samsung TV Plus, Rakuten TV, LG channels, and Pluto TV.
